Mechanical Engineer I Job Summary Uses a variety of technical skills in designing, building, andrepairing mechanical, electronic and related devices and equipmentused for research projects. Learn more about the great benefits of working forUniversity of Utah: benefits.utah.edu Responsibilities Research, design, develop, and evaluate mechanical components,products, and systems by using applied mechanical engineeringprinciples, including solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics,and heat transfer. Create prototypes and evaluate design to ensureconformance with engineering specifications. Conduct feasibilityassessments and perform failure analysis studies to ensure designperforms as expected. Evaluate cost and maintenance requirements ofdesign. Work with fabrication and manufacturing departments toensure final design is properly executed in the creation ofmechanical products. Create and interpret blueprints, technicaldrawings, and schematics. Model and design work using draftingtools or computer-aided (CAD)/drafting equipment and software todesign work. May manage project schedules and budgets. May berequired to approve designs that can impact the health, safety, andwelfare of the general public, as required by law. Requires a degree in mechanical engineering or international equivalent.Requires basic skill set and proficiency. Conducts work assignmentsas directed. Closely supervised with little latitude forindependent judgment. Minimum Qualifications EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher educationcan be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience(Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related workexperience). Department may hire employee at one of the following joblevels: Mechanical Engineer, I: Requires a bachelor's (orequivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or amaster's (or equivalency) degree. Preferences Proficient in 3D modeling and CNC programming of mill and lathewith Autodesk Fusion360.
